The Derrickman will report directly to the Driller.

  • Role

The Derrickman is responsible for assisting the Assistant Driller by undertaking tasks as assigned in an efficient and timely manner.

  • Supervises

Drill Crew assisting in the Derrick or Pump Room.

  • Key reponsibilities ( not limited to)
  • Derrick area.
  • Mud pump room, mud pit room, bulk chemical and sack store and mud mixing area.
  • Supervision and performance of personnel working in the above areas.
  • Physical condition of areas and equipment, planned inspections and relevant documentation.
  • Ensure the smooth running of the mud pumps and all the mud processing equipment and to perform routine maintenance on the same.
  • Carry out routine mud sampling and simple weight and viscosity checks and add chemicals as advised by the mud engineer.
  • Maintain all mud pumping and processing area in a clean and tidy condition.
  • Record the use of any mud pump parts, shale shaker and mud cleaner screens or mud cleaner cones as required.   Keep mud pump records up to date.
  • Before tripping to line-up the mud system and trip tank, to pull out and also to shut down unnecessary equipment.
  • Ensure that in the derrick:
    • There are no loose tools or debris lying around.
    • No loose ropes hanging from the board.
    • All tubulars are securely fastened.
    • Report faulty equipment and damage to the derrick structure.
  • Working at monkey board level, running or pulling tubulars in close communication with the Driller and the floor crews.
  • Monitor active pit levels to assist in well control, reporting any anomalies to the Driller immediately.
  • Assist in installation and movement of B.O.P. equipment.
  • Carry out repairs to the fluid end of the mud pumps and valves in the LP mud system.
  • In liaison with the Mud Engineer:
    • plan the use of the mud pits for taking on fluids and the back load of fluids.
    • prepare the mud pits for special mixes e.g. cement spacers. Supervise roustabouts when engaged in pit cleaning or pit entry.
    • assist in maintaining mud properties as per drilling programme.
  • Maintain the pump and pit room logbooks accurately and up to date for use as basis for handing over to the relief.
  • Responsible for the supervision and performance of personnel engaged in activities in their area of responsibility or for which they have been allocated responsibility by their supervisor.
  • Operate cement unit when required (and deemed competent).
  • Assist/carry out mechanical isolations on mud system equipment in accordance with platform permit to work systems.
  • Carry out casing stabbing duties from casing stabbing board during casing/tubing running/pulling operations where competent.
  • Stand-in for alternative work discipline as required.
  • Complete any other reasonable tasks as delegated by Line Supervisor.
  • Attend onshore or offshore meetings and additional training, as may be required.


  • Familiarise themselves with the Company Safety Policy and to take all reasonable care to ensure the health and safety of themselves and persons likely to be affected by their acts or omissions, as required under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • Ensure that the Company Safety Policy is fully implemented and adhered to by all persons under their authority.
  • Ensure that all tasks supervised are adequately planned in advance and Risk Assessed, making use of client, pre-shift, TBT/TRIC, and are communicated to those involved.
  • Comply with Waste Management Legislation, LOLER, Manual Handling Regulations, COSHH, Risk Assessments and other relevant legislation.
  • Take immediate action to contain, eliminate or guard against actual and potential hazards to safety, health, plant and equipment that come to their attention in the course of their work.
  • Provide adequate supervision for all employees (directly supervised).
  • Ensure that all personnel under their authority properly use and care for their personal protective equipment and to verify from time to time that such equipment is in serviceable condition.
  • Ensure that all equipment under their control complies with statutory requirements and is maintained at all times in a safe condition or is otherwise completely withdrawn from service.
  • Ensure that all working places for personnel on the installation are always, so far as reasonably practical, safe.
  • Ensure that all remedial work identified by planned inspections, incident investigations and by any other means is completed satisfactorily.
  • Bring to the immediate notice of their supervisor actual and potential hazards to safety, health, plant and equipment that come to their attention in the course of their work.
  • Ensure that planned safety inspections on the installation are carried out in accordance with the Company Safety Policy by themselves and those under their authority.
  • Attend safety meetings, pre-shift briefings, emergency and life saving drills in accordance with the Company Safety Policy.
  • Carry out unsafe act auditing and plant inspection at least once during each offshore trip (delegate as appropriate).
  • Monitor personnel under their supervision in their approach towards safety and provide proactive coaching whenever necessary.
  • Well Control (Drillers) and other statutory or contractual training.
  • Ensure that the Client lifesaving rules (or equivalent) are followed and adhered to by all persons under their authority


  • No financial responsibilities.

Systems and Processes

  • Comply with the Permit to Work system in operation.
  • Comply with ARCHER Safety Management System.


  • Become competent in their particular discipline and ensure their crew personnel work towards competency for their own positions to support career development.
  • Work in conjunction with Assessor to complete and identify any development activities.
  • Participate in the Archer Competence System and identify opportunities for assessment and supply evidence as per requirements to compliment the Assessor's decision on competence for the various elements.
  • Demonstrate the ability to meet the required Archer standards of competence in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that all employees under their authority have sufficient information and knowledge to carry out their job without endangering any persons, plant or equipment and are adequately trained and experienced for a particular task before they are instructed to carry it out.
  • Train to achieve proficiency in responsibilities as Assistant Driller in order to relieve when necessary. 


  • Ensure compliance to all relevant Company management systems and where applicable client procedures.
