The Lead Roughneck will report directly to the Derrickman.

  • Role

The Lead Roughneck is responsible for assisting the Derrickman by undertaking tasks as assigned in an efficient and timely manner.

  • Key responsibilities ( not limited to)
  • Derrick area
  • Mud pump room, mud pit room, bulk chemical and sack store and mud mixing area.
  • Physical condition of areas and equipment, planned inspections and relevant documentation
  • Check equipment on the rig floor is maintained to safe standard and assist in pre-use checks, perform maintenance of drilling equipment as required by supervision
  • Assist Derrickman and or during relief time carry out routine mud sampling and simple weight and viscosity checks and add chemical as advised by the mud engineer.
  • Maintain all mud pumping and processing area in a clean and tidy condition.
  • Assist Derrickman and or during relief time record the use of any mud pump parts, shale shaker and mud cleaner screens or mud cleaner cones as required. Keep mud pump records up to date.
  • Before tripping to line-up the mud systems and trip tank, to pull out and also to shut down unnecessary equipment as directed by the driller.
  • Ensure that in the derrick: Carry out rig inspections as required by SMS and supervision
    • There are no loose tools or debris lying around
    • No loose ropes hanging from the board
    • All tubulars are securely fastened
    • Report faulty equipment and damage to the derrick structure
  • Assist Derrickman and or during relief time work at monkey board level, running or pulling tubulars in close communication with the Driller and the floor crews.
  • Assist Derrickman and or during relief time monitor active pit levels to assist in well control, reporting any anomalies to the Driller immediately
  • Drive fork trucks as required for cargo and chemical handling
  • Assist in installation and movement of B.O.P. equipment,
  • Assist Derrickman and or during relief time carry out repairs to the fluid end of the mud pumps and valves in the LP mud system.
  • In liaison with the Derrickman:
    • Plan the use of the mud pits for taking on fluids and rhe back load of fluids,
    • Prepare the mud pits for special mixes e.g. cement spacers. Attend on cleaning the pits.
    • Assist in maintaining mud properties as per drilling programme
  • Maintain the pump and pit room logbooks accurately and up to date for use as basis for handing over to the relief.
  • Have a sound understanding of PTW requirements; Assist/carry out mechanical isolations on mud system equipment in accordance with platform permit to work systems.
  • Carry out casing stabbing duties from casing stabbing board during casing/tubing running/pulling operations where competent.
  • Stand-in for alternative work discipline as required.
  • Complete any other reasonable tasks as delegated by Line Supervisor.
  • Attend onshore or offshore meetings and additional training, as may be required.


  • Familiarize themselves with the Company Safety.
  • Ensure that the Company Safety Policy is fully implemented and adhered to by all persons under their authority.
  • Comply with Waste Management Legislation, Manual Handling Regulations, Risk Assessments and other relevant legislation.
  • Take immediate action to contain, eliminate or guard against actual and potential hazards to safety, health, plant and equipment that come to their attention in the course of their work.
  • Ensure that all working places for personnel on the installation are always, so far as reasonably practical, safe. Actively lead TRIC's and ensure all people understand what they are to do before allowing tasks to proceed
  • Bring to the immediate notice of their supervisor actual and potential hazards to safety, health, plant and equipment that come to their attention in the course of their work.
  • Attend safety meetings, pre-shift briefings, emergency and life-saving drills in accordance with the Company Safety Policy.
  • Ensure that the Client lifesaving rules (or equivalent) are followed and adhered to by all persons under their authority

Systems and Processes

  • Comply with the Permit to Work system in operation.
  • Comply with ARCHER Safety Management System.
  • People
  • Become competent in their particular discipline.
  • Work in conjunction with Assessor to complete and identify any development activities.
  • Participate in the Archer Competence System and identify opportunities for assessment and supply evidence as per requirements to compliment the Assessor's decision on competence for the various elements.
  • Demonstrate the ability to meet the required Archer standards of competence in a timely manner.
  • Monitor floormen in the performance of their duties, acting as coach and mentor to less experienced individuals
  • Work towards achieving Derrickman competency.
  • Coach Roustabouts and Floorman in Derrickman duties to assist them with their competency.
  • Attend Client and ARCHER training or meetings as required.

  • Ensure compliance to all relevant Company management systems and where applicable client procedures
